Two rascals
Wilhelm Wagenfeld: Salt and Pepper Shakers Max and Moritz, 1952/54
In Germany, the 1950s were referred to as the era of the ‘economic miracle’. After the horrors of the Second World War, most people were now financially better off: they earned more money, could afford to buy more and wanted to start a new life, which also included totally new furnishings. The German designer Wilhelm Wagenfeld designed all sorts of household items. He believed that the more everyday a thing was, the more carefully its design had to be thought through. For Max and Moritz he used glass and metal. This mix of materials is very practical: with the transparent glass it is immediately evident whether the shaker contains salt or pepper.
