Our Mission Statement

Who are we?

Spanning a timeframe from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, with around 250,000 objects, our museum is one of the largest institutions for applied art in Germany.

We see ourselves as an "art museum plus". The "plus" stands for the dialogue between art and design and signifies a constantly expanding concept of art and design. Objects from both the past and the present can be experienced authentically and inspire visitors to engage with artistic creativity and the designed environment.

What are our tasks?

Within the framework of a contemporary and future-oriented concept, we understand our core museum tasks, such as collecting, preserving, researching, educating and exhibiting, as interlinked fields of activity that complement each other. On the basis of defined collection profiles that highlight the special features of our museum and fit our remit, we collect and preserve art for present and future generations alike.

Through our research, which is based on international standards, and through our academic competence, we create content-related connections. We convey these through creative, target-group-specific events and inspiring exhibitions.

What do we stand for?

We stand for openness.

We live openness through respectful and appreciative interaction with each other and with our visitors.

As a public-municipal museum, we see our commitment as a social obligation. We support the interdisciplinary dialogue between creative professionals, researchers and the general public. We promote collaboration and networking on a national and international level.

We see our museum as a knowledge store; we create open access to information – in an analogue, digital and playful way – and we share this information equally with all interested parties.

We stand for societal relevance.

We see our museum as a lively, inclusive place of encounter and learning.

Our socio-political understanding is based on the liberal democratic constitution. The discourse on socially relevant topics and dynamic processes is important to us. In this context, we consciously focus on creativity and sustainability, based on the goals of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.

We stand for diversity.

The multifaceted nature of our collections is reflected in the thematic diversity and orientation of our exhibitions and educational programmes.

In our diverse society, we are committed to ensuring that all people can access our exhibitions and events – regardless of age, ethnic origin, nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental abilities, religion and worldview, sexual orientation and social background.

Our programme addresses historical and contemporary topics, current and socially relevant issues, as well as new research results.

We stand for creative conveyance.

Diverse academic findings on the process of learning are considered in our experimental, creative and technically innovative approach to education.

The central focus of our analogue and digital education programme is the shared experience of creative processes. We show new perspectives and create both traditional and unconventional ways to approach and experience objects and future-oriented topics.
