Painting
The highlights of the collections include paintings as well as glass and reverse glass paintings.
The spectrum ranges from early medieval altarpieces to computer-generated art from the 20th and 21st centuries. A particular focus is on panel paintings from German and Dutch schools of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Important masters such as Martin Schongauer, Hans Memling, Rogier van der Weyden, Joos van Cleve and Adriaen Ysenbrandt are represented with prominent works. The collection focuses on portraits from the Baroque period.
Portraits of rulers by Georges Désmarees or from the circle of Joseph Vivien as well as bourgeois portraits by Anthonis van Dyck, Frans I. Floris de Vriendt or Anthonis Mor van Dashorst set their own accents. The family portrait by the Art Nouveau artist Hans Christiansen, in which he portrayed himself with his wife and children, is also outstanding. The 20th and 21st centuries have a special focus: constructive geometric tendencies are reflected in the work of Theo van Doesburg, László Moholy-Nagy, Verena Loewensberg, Richard Paul Lohse, Kenneth Martin and Manfred Mohr.
Special treasures can also be found in the area of stained glass. Colored ornamental windows from the 13th and 14th centuries, gold-etched depictions of the Madonna and saints, Baroque coats of arms and secular and sacred stained glass windows from the first third of the 20th century with prominent artists such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Jan Thorn Prikker and Elisabeth Coester reflect the fascination of this translucent material.
