Charles & Ray Eames: ESU Shelf and Desk, 1950

The couple Charles and Ray Eames worked together as designers for almost 40 years. Ray was an artist and Charles an architect – they complemented each other perfectly. And they both loved the circus. Everything about the circus appeared to be light-hearted and fun and the hard work behind the scenes was barely visible – that’s what fascinated the couple about the circus world. The furniture designed by the duo is similar: often colourful and playful, using simple construction systems and materials while all the preliminary consideration and ideas upon which the design is based is not always apparent.
