Charles & Ray Eames: Leg Splint, 1943-45

Charles and Ray Eames also received direct commissions from business and industry. For example, from 1943 to 1945 as an assignment from the US government, they produced leg splints for soldiers wounded in the Second World War. The leg splint is made from plywood, which is bent using steam so that the splint perfectly adapts to the human leg. When a soldier had broken a leg, it could be supported by the splint. The splint was fastened around the leg with a bandage to keep the leg in a stable position.
