Like a chick in an egg

Arne Jacobsen: Sessel Egg Chair, 1957/58

A few years later, Arne Jacobsen was commissioned to build and furnish a big hotel in Copenhagen. Chairs were set up in the large reception hall. The hotel’s guests could relax in these Egg Chairs and were able to retreat somewhat in the otherwise large open hall because the chair is not only comfortable, but its curved shell and high backrest also provided a space to hide in or to lie back and take a nap. The chair’s round and organic shape forms the biggest possible contrast to the architecture of the 20-storey hotel: the structure is very linear and geometrical and features a glass and steel façade. Let's take a look at the architecture!

Eine kindliche Zeichnung: Ein Junge sitzt in einem grün-blauen eierförmigen Schalensessel und sagt: "Wie aus dem Ei gepellt, der Sessel".
