A chance find
Amanda Levete: Drift Bench, 2006
British architect Amanda Levete was inspired by a piece of driftwood that she found to form the Drift bench. Many of you will probably have sat on a big piece of driftwood by a river or by the sea, looking onto the water. After its journey through the ocean, the tree trunk’s surface has been smoothed and it has taken on a soft, curved form. Just as Amanda’s bench. Only its garish colour is not directly reminiscent of a tree trunk.
This kind of shape is called organic or biomorphic as opposed to geometric shapes, which other designers like to use.
