The Architectural Eye: Epochal – Global is the second comprehensive museum exhibition by architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch. From Pompeii to Cologne Cathedral, from the Chrysler Building in New York to the works of Oswald Mathias Ungers and Abu Dhabi Airport, which only opened in 2025; from Beijing to Shibam and the old town of Sana’a in Yemen; from Hong Kong to Cologne and Neviges in the Bergisches Land – the architecture of the world is Esch’s subject matter.

Born in Neuwied in 1964, Hans Georg Esch has been working for over 40 years both as a commissioned photographer and on independent projects, including his own photobooks. From 11 June to 27 September 2026, the MAKK presents a selection of his work. On display are large-format masterpieces alongside serial image sequences that explore the global phenomenon of architecture and its contemporary relevance across different periods.

Buildings, design details, urban architectural spaces and panoramas are transformed through Esch’s distinctive “architectural eye” into iconic images, independent of their cultural and geographical context. The well-known Pop Art thesis – that it is the photograph which shapes our perception of the object – is powerfully confirmed by Esch’s architectural photography
